It's Veni Vidi Vici for Villanova's Sheila Reid

The Sporting News -- Canada

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Canada's Sheila Reid became the first woman to win both the 1,500 and 5,000 metres at the NCAA track and field championships Saturday, while Julie Labonte won the shot put with a Canadian-record throw.

Reid, a native of Newmarket, Ont., and a junior at Villanova, won the 1,500 with a late burst at Drake Stadium, crossing in four minutes 14.57 seconds. Lucy Van Dalen won the silver in 4:15.33, while Kate Van Buskirk of Brampton, Ont., a senior at Duke, was third in 4:15.37.

Reid couldn't contain her excitement as she crossed the finish line, pumping her fist on the way to the win.

"I couldn't even think straight when I crossed the finish line. I gave probably the most embarrassing celebration ever," Reid said. "I'm so ecstatic right now. It hasn't totally sunk in yet."

Reid's victory came a day after she claimed the 5,000-metre title.

Labonte, from Ste-Justine, Que., and a sophomore with the Arizona Wildcats, threw 18.31 metres on her second of six throws to top her own Canadian record of 18.21 she set earlier this season.

Oklahoma's Tia Brooks was second with 18.00 metres, while Tennessee's Annie Alexander won bronze with 17.66.

Matt Hughes of Oshawa, Ont., won the men's 3,000-metre steeplechase title for the second consecutive year. Hughes set a stadium record and personal best time of 8:24.87 on Friday night.
