Beamish and Gibney Named to Capital One Academic All-District First Team

Villanova seniors now move on to ballot for Academic All-America honors

June 3, 2011

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Seniors Hugo Beamish (Havelock North, New Zealand) and Matthew Gibney (Albury, Australia) have each been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 Men's Track & Field/Cross Country first team and will now move on to the national ballot as candidates for Academic All-America honors.

The district and national ballots are voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), with the all-district teams announced this week and the All-America teams scheduled to be released later this month.

Beamish was one of the top cross country runners for Villanova this past fall, earning All-Mid Atlantic Region honors and helping the Wildcats advance as a team to the NCAA Championships for the third straight season. He was one of the team's top five runners in every race he ran and finished fifth on the squad at the national championships meet. Beamish is a three-time All-Mid Atlantic Region performer.

In the classroom Beamish carries a 3.71 grade-point average as a Civil Engineering major and is a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Following the cross country season he was named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team.

The 2010-11 campaign has also been a good one on the track for Beamish, who was the individual BIG EAST champion in the 5000 meters during the indoor season. He previously established a new personal best time in the 5000 meters with a time of 13:51.60 indoors at the Flotrack Husky Classic. During the outdoor season Beamish qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 5000 meters after previously finishing ninth in the event at both the BIG EAST Championships and the IC4A Championship.

Gibney has also been a top contributor for Villanova this season while simultaneously achieving strong academic results. He returned from an injury late in the cross country season to help key the Wildcats run to a team appearance at the NCAA Championships. Gibney ran in all three of the team's postseason races as Villanova finished the season strong.

The top performances from Gibney over the past year, however, have come on the track. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1500 meters and will represent the Wildcats next week at the national meet in Des Moines, Iowa. Last week Gibney had the fastest overall time at the NCAA East Regional in the national quarterfinals of the 1500 meters.

Earlier in the outdoor season Gibney anchored Villanova to a Championship of America title in the distance medley relay at the Penn Relays, where the Wildcats won their 94th Penn Relays title all-time and the 24th in the DMR. Gibney went on to earn All-BIG EAST honors in the 800 meters prior to his success in the 1500 meters at the NCAA postseason races.

During the indoor season Gibney qualified for the NCAA Championships in the Mile after earning All-BIG EAST honors in the event with a second place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. Earlier in the season he ran the first sub-four minute mile of his career when he posted a time of 3:58.12 at the Flotrack Husky Classic in Washington.

Gibney is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and carries a 3.78 GPA as an English major.
