June 2, 1989: Huber Crushes 3000 meter Competition at NCAA Championships
A Villanova woman won the NCAA 3000 title every year from 1987 to 1992 -- six straight winners, from Vicki Huber to Sonia O'Sullivan to Nnenna Lynch. While each victory was rather comfortable, at least in the finishing times (the closest margin of victory in any of the six races was Huber's first win in Baton Rouge in 1987: 3.6 seconds), the most dominant performance was turned in by Huber in 1989 in Provo, Utah. In the race, a calendar year after finishing 6th at the Seoul Olympics in 8:37.25 -- Huber on by an astounding 20.3 seconds (in a race significantly less than 2 miles!). Oddly, and owing no doubt to the altitude at Provo, it was the slowest winning time of Huber's three wins (her 8:47.35 the year before set the NCAA record). Huber's teammate Sonia O'Sullivan, 11th in this race, would win the NCAA title the next two years. Here are the results of that June 2, 1989 race -- 22 years ago today.
